Requirements:

Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be prepared to perform shift work in accordance with the Collective Agreement
- The candidates should have the ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position
- The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal courteously with the public and strong communication skills related to their job duties
- The candidates should be physically capable of performing required duties, with accommodations provided as needed under the City’s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement and work in all weather conditions
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess and maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and meet the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
- The candidates should be familiar with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of their duties or be capable of obtaining this familiarity
- The candidates should possess and maintain any valid Province of Ontario requirements necessary to operate mechanized equipment
- The candidates should have a good driving record and familiarity with the location of major city streets
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to operate a wide variety of collection vehicles and equipment independently or with a crew member
- The candidates should be able to move carts or bags to the truck and use appropriate mechanisms to dump or manually lift onto the truck
- The candidates should be able to operate mechanical equipment attached to vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- The candidates should be able to lift and load garbage, recyclable materials, organics, organic yard waste, and special pick-up items such as household appliances, discarded furniture, wood, carpet, and electronics
- The candidates should be able to place empty carts and containers back to the set-out location in a tidy manner
- The candidates should be able to assist the operator by signaling the vehicle being maneuvered or backed up when on a two-person crew
- The candidates should be able to drive vehicles to designated disposal facilities and unload all materials in accordance with the facility operator’s requirements
- The candidates should be able to perform daily pre-trip inspections (Circle Checks), identify and report vehicle and equipment malfunctions, and maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean and tidy condition
- The candidates should be able to complete reports, such as Driver’s Collision or Incident Reports, related to assigned duties and responsibilities and operate a two-way radio or mobile phone
- The candidates should be able to perform other duties at this wage grade level or lower, such as laboring duties, maintenance, and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicles or equipment and perform work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner
