Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to work in a highly demanding work environment with many competing priorities and deadlines
  • The candidates should be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in exposure to unpleasant odors, noise, dander, and animal feces
  • The candidates should have the ability to work rotating shifts (day, afternoon, night, weekend, and holidays) and standby as required. They may be required to do shift or overtime and weekend work in conformance with the Collective Agreement
  • The candidates should be in good physical condition, with agility and strength, including the ability to stand for long periods while cleaning and feeding animals, managing, and lifting animals, including large dogs and heavy articles (weighing up to 25 kgs)

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience in the use of a computerized records and data management system Chameleon and computerized software packages MS Office Suite, including Word and Excel), email and experience working directly with dogs, cats, or small animals in a shelter and veterinary clinic setting
  • The candidates should possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and have the ability to obtain and maintain the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements and immunized against rabies and have a titre test every two years to determine immunity level and, if needed, receive booster vaccinations
  • The candidates should have strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task to effectively carry out the various duties and responsibilities of this position, with minimal supervision and direction and animal services programs, regulations, and legislation pertaining to animals Municipal Code Chapter 349 and Dog Owners’ Liability Act
  • The candidates should have the ability to work in a customer service environment with excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills, dealing effectively with all levels of staff, the public, and external contacts in person, by telephone, and in writing in a courteous manner and understanding of the Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) regulations, and the Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters
  • The candidates should have an excellent understanding of the usage, dosage, and common side-effects of commonly used prescription drugs and be able to readily explain them to the veterinarian and superiors and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of their duties and responsibilities or capable of obtaining familiarity with the same
  • The candidates should have an excellent understanding of common diseases and be able to alert the veterinarian and superiors when symptoms arise or when concerns arise with animals and excellent understanding of all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols for dogs and cats
  • The candidates should have a good understanding of animal behavior and the ability to handle a wide variety of animals (domestic and wildlife species), including injured and possibly dangerous animals, utilizing humane tools, equipment, technical devices, and techniques
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with employees and management and ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing at all levels of the organization

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide daily care and humane handling of animals including, feeding, watering, grooming, maintaining sanitary conditions in the shelter, and provide compassionate care to all animals and triage animals as they arrive in the shelter and administer animal health requirements, flea treatments, and parasite control
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and administer medication, including giving subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian and physical and behavioural assessments, record observations, and identify and report health concerns of animals
  • The candidates should be able to collect and prepare biological samples, such as blood, feces, urine, and hair or skin specimens, for external laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination, and operate a pathological incinerator
  • The candidates should be able to assist the veterinarian during the examination of animals, providing effective restraint as needed to work safely and effectively and perform euthanasia under the direction of the veterinarian
  • The candidates should be able to obtain animal identification information by examining animals and records, including breed, sex, age, markings and record information and update the database
  • The candidates should be able to clean and sterilize equipment and work areas to ensure the highest standard of cleanliness and sanitation, following health and safety regulations and protocols
  • The candidates should be able to assist the Shelter Veterinary Technician in maintaining medical and shelter inventories and supplies, including equipment and provide services including animal intake, claims, searches, adoptions and registrations including handling of receipt transactions, as well as transporting animals to other locations
  • The candidates should be able to complete reports Incident Report and maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures, and behavioural history related to assigned duties and responsibilities
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the delivery of public education programs and animal services events and responsible pet ownership through the delivery of animal services programs and initiatives
  • The candidates should be able to utilize computer systems and other information and communication technologies related to animal services and work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner
