Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Bachelors in Nursing and certification in Nursing Administration or equivalent management experience as per Ontario Regulation 79/10 made under the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in geriatric and/or rehabilitation nursing

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should provide a satisfactory Police Reference Check (PRC) with vulnerable sector screening, tuberculosis screening and proof of immunization in accordance with the Long-Term Care Homes Act (O.Reg.79/10)

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario or another College of Nurses with the ability to obtain registration as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario and should ideally have a Master’s Degree
  • The candidates should have considerable experience in motivating, leading, supervising, or managing registered and unregulated staff in a large-sized Long-Term Care unionized environment and possess considerable experience in geriatric and/or rehabilitation nursing
  • The candidates should have considerable experience working with residents with dementia and mental health issues and demonstrate knowledge of Resident Assessment Instrument – Minimum Data Set (RAI-MDS) 2.0
  • The candidates should have knowledge of legislation in Long-Term Care, as well as any other pertinent legislation influencing the operations of a Long-Term Care home, such as the Long-Term Care Homes Act (O.Reg.79/10), Residents Bill of Rights, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • The candidates should have the ability to achieve positive clinical outcomes through quality improvement and change management and demonstrate the ability to manage competing priorities and demands in a rapidly changing environment
  • The candidates should be able to deal effectively and courteously and build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders including residents, families, community groups, elected officials, and senior managers, as well as work effectively within interprofessional teams
  • The candidates should possess the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing at a (senior) management level with excellent presentation skills and demonstrate the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to implement detailed plans and recommend policies/procedures regarding program-specific requirements and able to lead, develop, and motivate a cohesive team to ensure high standards of work quality, continuous learning, and innovation in others
  • The candidates should be able to supervise the day-to-day operation of all assigned staff, including scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work and able to address any personnel challenges or issues to promote a productive, positive, and supportive work environment
  • The candidates should be able to authorize and coordinate vacation and overtime requests and monitor and evaluate staff performance, approve salary increments, hear grievances, and recommend disciplinary action when necessary
  • The candidates should be able to provide input into and administer assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations and able to promote positive inter-professional team relationships to ensure effective resident care programs according to best practice models through effective communication with disciplines, role modeling, and philosophy and action evidencing the importance of all disciplines in the home to promote high-quality resident care
  • The candidates should be able to provide support to and serve as a resource to family members via teaching, coaching, linking with other resources, investigation, and follow-up regarding identified issues and able to serve as a member of the Home’s various operating and management committees and participate in external committees as assigned by the Director of Care/Director Nursing
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to divisional policies and procedures development and update and able to review resident and staff data on a regular basis to measure the effectiveness of resident care
  • The candidates should be able to ensure all reports and statements required from the unit are prepared on a timely and efficient basis and that unit files and records are properly maintained and able to take action to ensure resident safety, report and conduct investigations of unsafe practices, resident abuse, or professional misconduct, and document incidents in accordance with legislation and regulations
  • The candidates should be able to oversee the infection prevention and control practices in the Home, including monitoring and trending infections, outbreaks, and staff practices related to infection control and able to provide leadership and direction to both Resident Assessment Instrument-Minimum Data Set (RAI-MDS) and interprofessional rehabilitation programs in the home
  • The candidates should be able to represent the Home in consultation with external community specialists on various topics related to resident care and able to provide support and serve as a resource to the registered staff for clinical practice issues through role modeling, coaching, mentoring, and answering questions
  • The candidates should be able to co-ordinate the established system of resident reassessment and classification to ensure that documentation is current, accurate, and reflective of the resident plan and nursing care provided and ensure medications are safely and securely stored, properly distributed, and administered to individual residents through direct observations and follow-up of all medication incidents
  • The candidates should be able to develop and lead the interprofessional care team to provide quality resident and family-centered care that reflects the division’s mission, values, and philosophy of care and services and conduct critical incident and complaint investigations related to nursing practices and conduct clinical audits of documentation, plans of care, and the effectiveness of nursing care and services
  • The candidates should be able to co-ordinate the established system of resident reassessment and classification to ensure that documentation is current, accurate, and reflects the resident plan and nursing care provided and develop and implement the 6-week staffing schedules by the nursing support clerks to ensure accurate and timely completion of the schedule
  • The candidates should be able to review work routines to promote efficiency and effectiveness in nursing care and services and able to address resident/family concerns/complaints and follow up to resolve issues promptly
  • The candidates should be able to lead the implementation and evaluation of abuse and critical incident inspection protocols, audits, and plans of action and orders and collaborate with the interprofessional care team to identify clinical practice gaps/trends and to advance care excellence through meaningful program integration, standardization, and system improvements
  • The candidates should be able to participate in researching, integrating, and promoting evidence-based clinical care models to achieve organizational goals and objectives and able to co-ordinate the established system of resident reassessment and classification to ensure that documentation is current, accurate, and reflects the resident plan and nursing care provided
  • The candidates should be able to conduct critical incident and complaint investigations and follow up and able to oversee and monitor referrals to other health care facilities and services
  • The candidates should be able to ensure the development of unit supply quotas and ensure that the unit is properly supplied with all required material and equipment and able to collaborate with the Director of Care/Director Nursing to approve salary increments and effectively control the overtime work and casual time-off of such staff
  • The candidates should be able to assess and monitor unit expenditures and complete the appropriate variance reports and able to identify work performance problems and initiate appropriate corrective action, including training/re-training, counseling, and disciplinary action
